maple walnut scone

I've been wanting to share some of my favourite baking recipes. Baking is my day-off ritual. This delicious scone recipe is vegan and very easy to make. This wall nuts scone recipe comes from Shiho Nakashima's cake and muffin book http://foodmood.jp/. I'd recommend organic ingredients if possible. Murry River pink salt, Lotus Rapandura sugar, Spiral sunflower oil, organic walnuts are used in this recipe.

Ingredients:
a.
Organic plain flour 100g
Panella sugar L table spoon 1
Baking powder S tea spoon 1
A pinch of salt

b.
Sunflower seed oil L table spoon 1
Soy milk 40ml

Maple nuts:
Walnuts 50g
Maple syrup L table spoon 1 & half
A pinch of salt

1. Prep
Lightly heat walnuts in a pan.
Place baking paper onto baking tray
Preheat oven to 180 degrees.

2. Make candied walnuts
First make maple candied nuts. Add maple syrup and salt into m size sauce pan. Bring it boil with medium heat. When large bubbles start to form, add nuts and stir them for 10 seconds. Remove nuts onto baking paper or non-stick surface and let cool. Once nuts are cool, simply break them up with fingers.

3. Make scone dough
Mix all the ingredients a into a bowl with hands. Make a well in the centre and add b. Mix them all up gently with spatula. Finally add maple nuts and make large ball of dough. Move the dough mix onto board and knead it 5 to 6 times. Flatten the dough with hands to 2.5cm thickness and divide into 6 pieces. Place them onto baking tray and bake for 20-22 mins.

We had a lovely time at the historic Old Museum during Finders Keepers Market. Brisbane market offered great music and healthy food (yummy vegan bean salad, fresh sugar cane juices and real Japanese yakirori).

This was a short trip but we are lucky to visit Northey St City Farm Sunday farmers market. They runs cafe, nursery and workshops too. At the market, we grabbed Macadamia honey, freshed baked bagles and Mushroom shop power lunch box (full of sauteed mushroom, avocado and greens). I wish we have this market in Melbourne...

I met lovely Steph from Five Boroughs in Bruswick East yesterday to drop off some of my pieces including new twig necklaces and nami wave brooches. Steph also runs Holy Daze label specialising hand screen printed bags, homewares and cards.

My favourite is Holy Daze's door pyramid shape stoppers. I have one for over 3 years now and it is well made and still looks new.

This strip of Bruswick East is keep changing and more cafes are opening next door to their shop. Monsieur Truffe is just opened next to El Mirage Cafe at 351 Lygon St, East Bruswick. I've tried croque monsieur and a latte and they are pretty good. Next time I have to try their famous hot chocolate. It's also kids and baby friendly cafe. Great news for mums.

Today I want to write about a very inspirational design duo from Tokyo. ON ZA LINE is founded by Ai Kurahashi and Kiyomi Kodama who make wearable art and objects made from fine porcelain. Ai is a good friend of my high school mate and I first met her during studying at Nihon Uni. Ai is the most fashionable person I know and her style is always unique and a little bit edgy.

On Za Line piece is whimsical and truly beautiful.

I'm showcasing some of the new pieces this Sunday's North Melbourne market at Lithuanian Club. I've got some acrylic mirrors made and they are based on my ceramic brooches and also did drawings for elephant design.

The heart necklace is made from porcelain clay and the half is decorated with etched slip and then clear gloss glazed applied. It comes with organic linen cord and a handmade bead. It's a very sweet piece.

I visited maiike store in Hawthron a couple of weeks ago to meet Feride. It's light filled and spacious shop and feels like an extension of their home. Truly beautiful space. Aly, co-owner, makes handmade toys and cot throws made from recycled jumper and also kid tees.

There is Tane cafe which is a new cafe opened by a Japanese couple, located a few shops down Church St. We tried miso soup (very original with whole soy beans) and sandwich (very fresh and yummy whole grain bread). Their coffee is good and home baked pastry and biscotti are the winner.

Here are some pictures of this year's Design Made Trade. We had a good friend who studies Visual Merchandising, help to set up our stand. My partner, Ivan made some acrylic cut vintage bread board mirrors for display and my classic designs for sale. It was a great joy to share a stand with Harvest Textiles and ceramicist Shelly Panton.

This week I was putting some wholesale orders through but next week I will allocate some time to prepare for the next Sister's Market held on the 6th August. My new pendant pieces may just make it for the market but more rings and earrings will be available for Oct market.

When I was 19, I decided to spent a year in London. It was great break from my Uni, studying commerce in Tokyo. Most of my afternoon are dedicated fror movie cinemas and galleris. We had a lovely time at Eaglehawk's Birds of a Feather Artist Market this Saturday.

It's 10 mins drive from historic Bendigo city and situated in the heart of gold field. Market shed is located next to a fairtrade store and is full of friendly community spirits and everyone feels very welcome there. Next one is happening in Spring and it's worth visiting.

I've bought satay mix for us to make marinated tofu, and Persian blue salt (beautiful cheesy flavour) and Australian bush pepper blend for a friend in London. After store is a little shop located at Queen Victoria Market. The shop is full of fair trade items such as African woven bascket and bowls made from recycled paper packaging. They also stock rustic Mexican decorations, vintage glass flasks, small glass bottles and Ardeba enamelware, especially spotted water jug and small teapots are really cute.

They use to have pretty irregular openning hours and it's best visit when Vic Market is open.

I've been looking for Aesop liquid handwash alternatives and finally came across with Cosse. Annie has a studio at Affotsford Convent and crates beautiful soaps, lip balm and scented candles. Lovely handwash comes in orange&lavender, peppermint&rosemary and vanilla&orange. It lathers really well and leaves subtle smell after wash. I use it after working with clay. Her mother is a ceramicist and makes soap dishes and oil vessels. Her body lotion would be the next one to try this winter :)

Manchester Press is a new addition to the Melbourne city cafes. It was just opened 3 weeks ago from people run Loco cafe in Elsternwick. Manchester Press is located on a laneway off Little Bourke St. It's very spacious and I love their custom made rustic tables and very large industrial lamp shades.

Today I enjoyed fresh bagel sandwich with pastrami ham and cream cheese - very filling and tasty. Their coffee is also excellent.

Last week I visited Michelle from Quince at her beautiful showroom store in Malvern East. I have to say quince store is one of the most beautiful store in Melbourne.

Miche specilises in tableware, bedlinen, cushions and lamp shades using her hand printed textiles. Her shop/studio space feels like an extension of her home. It's very cosy space and you will lose a track ot time there.

canterbury art exhibition

I just dropped off some pieces for Canterbury Art Exhibition which will be held at Canterbury Primary School on 1 April to 3 April 2011. My pieces will be sold at their retail section.

It's a fantastic fund raising event and i'm proud to be a part of it.

After that, I dropped in Triceangle cafe in Hawthorn for quick bite to eat. It's run by Okumura couple who make beautiful onigiri rice balls, miso soup, other 'Yoshoku' Japanese Western style meals and J style sweets. Its decor is minimal but authentic food and Houji-cha latte are to die for. You can also enjoy a set French dinning experience every Saturday nights(booking essential). Triceangle is located in the middle of Swinburne Uni Campus cafe area.

Here are some of the favourite items made in Japan which I want to share with you.

I came across their black ceramic stuckable canisters at Zakkaya, Fitzroy last year. It is used as a butter dish at home. 4th market is based in Mie prefecture and specialises in everyday tableware and cookware. http://www.4th-market.com/top.html

Second items are very affordable tin tea canisters made by Syuro. I purchased their products at a small Zakka shop in Kitijyoji. another etsy purchase from hellojenuine http://www.hellojenuine.etsy.com/. I bought a lovely recycled timber frame from Mulbury gallery direct for this bison print. My partner works not far from Mulbury and I often go there after having lunch with him. We bought a stool made from old hessian bag which are made in India. It's inexpensive and very comfortable to sit on.

Here's my fondest cafe in Collingwood which run by a Japanese couple. The place is full of rustic furniture and industrial object. I believe the owner is an architect and you can see architectural objects, posters and book around the cafe too. There's also a gallery shop which stocks beautiful Japanese Tenugui tea towels from Kamawanu, traditional toys, Hakusan porcelain tableware and Sori Yanagi table & kitchen collection.

Their J breakfast set is pretty authentic and worth trying. Soba noodle salad and tofu burger are also delicious. cibi also serves great coffee and home baked cakes :)

Here's a lovely Japanese baby clothes online shop run by Chika. Chika and her childhood friend in Tokyo select quality baby clothes and accessories from Australia and New Zealand. Their focus is on organic cotton, New Zealand organic merino and sustainable bamboo fibre. Their original clothing line, Kokobaby is a new addition to the store and I love simple baby pants and bib finished with cute spotty fabric embellishments.

Here's Nest, another beautiful shop, which is my first stockist in Tasmania. Natalie supports local crafters and artisans in a small coastal town called Penguin. There is nice pebble beach and great Penguin Market for local produce and nic nacs and I remember a retro local cafe which serves tasty sandwiches and good coffees.

Little shop of handmade is a little gem in Carnegie, situated just outside the train station off main street. I have my Ampersand pendants specially made for Little Shop. They come in red, black and white. Please check them out.

There is a great Japanese takeaway : Shun on the main street of Carnegie. They serve fresh Chirashi sashimi donburi and sushi sashimi platter for very reasonable prices. Tofu Choc mousse and macha green tea mousses are to die for. You should also try Dorayaki (Japanese sweet pancake) with homemade custard filling.

Kichijyoji again

Here are my two favourite stores in Kichijyoji, Tokyo _ roundabout and outbound.

Both stores are sister's shops run by the same owner. Roundabout sells beautifully hand crafted jewelleries and shoes by local makers, men's and women's clothes and Noda enamel kitchenware. Outbound is more like a gallery store with cool rustic interior and simple minimal displays.

kamakura Milk Hall Cafe Bar

This is my favourite spot in Kamakura, Kanagawa. It's about 1 hour train ride from Tokyo station and you can view many historic temples and shrines.

Milk hall sets in an old house with Japanese European rooms called Yo-ma.

They offer beautiful slow cooked vegetable soup, Japanese curry and beef stews for lunch. You can also try locally brewed beer.

Off Komachi St which is a main shopping strip with many souvenir shops.

Nido contemporary glass in Yanaka

Here's a lovely stained glass workshop / gallery store in Yanaka, Tokyo which is located within good walking distance from Ueno JR station.

The shop is off main street and in an old apartment. You will feel like you are step back in time, perhaps Showa-era.I've bought a small flower shaped hand mirror with handmade kimono pouch there which I will cherish it for a very long time. You can buy small mirror, pendants, glass tiles, lamp shades and cabinets - they're all really beautiful. They also runs one day work shop which I'm very keen on trying next time.

Craft Hatch Market

I'm putting things together for the next Craft Hatch Market run by Craft Victoria.
The market will be held from 10am to 4pm at State Library of Victoria on 23rd Oct 2010.
This is going to be my very first market and thrilled to be part of Craft Hatch to showcase my work.

Here are some pictures of new wall decor set. You can also placed on table as a center piece. Rustic Japanese matt glaze are brushed onto pieces to give unique rough texture with industrial look.

Finders Keepers Market at Docklands

Much anticipated Sydney's Finders Keepers Markets are having the first market here in Melbourne. My new stockist, Leelou has a stall which sells good selection of and O items such as Summer Cloud pendant and hand stitched brooches.

It's going to be a huge market with live music and good coffee. Honestly I've never been to Docklands so am very excited to explore the area.

teq teq in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo

This is one of my most favourite area in Tokyo - Shimokitazawa.

It's 2 Express train stops from Odakyu Shinjyuku station.

I used to go there almost every month for vintage clothes hunting, trinckets and great bakeries.

Teq Teq is a little gem in Shimokita which runs as a bakery cafe and a store specialising hand made crafts. The owner, she (never asked her name) also runs baking classes for locals.

The breads and biscuits which she makes are quite Japanese style but made with lots of love and very tasty. Teq Teq is located in residential area and is not easy to spot.

Please give her a ring or print out a map before making your way.

Hakuraku Bagel

Another great spot to step by if you happen to be in Hakuraku on Tokyu Toyoko line. I say they serve one of the best bagel bread in Tokyo area. Dough is quite chewy but very soft and moist. Hakuraku bagel rus a small cafe in the same place. Simple plain bagle is the best but ones with sweet potato, blue berries and choc chip ones are yummy too. Last time when I was in Tokyo, I came across a shop called eimeku in Hakuraku, Yokohama which select beautiful items from all over Japan and Europe. They also make original bags using imported fabrics which are really beautiful. I bought a lovely pair of shoes made by Mulinsen which are based in Asakusa, Tokyo. All the Mulinsen shoes are reasonably priced with classic styles. You can find a link to eimeku site.

Here are some new products. Black & white diamond brooches. Very simple but strong piece. Lace jewellery holders are very practical and hold many pairs of earrings and you are not going to lose your favourite pair again. They are available on my Etsy shop. Here's a picture taken in Enoshima Beach, kanagawa this year. It reminds me of some of the old paintings. I had a fun day exploring Kamakura (historic city like Kyoto, you can visit many shrines and temples) and Enonshima. Will write more about my favorite places around Tokyo soon.

This is my new products Uchi house and Kumo cloud brooch. It comes from my lovely childhood memory. I grew up in a small house in Tokyo, surrounded by my cousins and good neighbours. We often got together and did enjoy hiking,camping,skiing and more (fireworks & traditional Bon-odori summer dance). I felt really secure there and connected to everyone.

They has stitching design using black underglaze pen. Uchi brooch and pendant are now available for purchase on Madeit and Etsy site. Please check them out.

I was in Izu, which is about 2hours from Tokyo and a lovely sea side town, doing 10km walk along the ocean with my parents and other bunch of people.

This is a part of walking Izu Peninsula tour and we met up at Atami station (famous for hot springs).

We wandered around the station before starting our journey and I came across this old building with a beautiful old padlock. It belongs to a local builder as a storage shed but not sure of it. There is only one old building remaining in the area which is really sad.

Anyway I'm working on a padlock design for new pendant collection.

This old padlock is my design inspiration.

Last time when I visited Tokyo, I had a wonderful time discovering small local galleries, shops, bakeries and cafes.

Cafe Yoko-o is one of my favorites.
The cafe is located in Kichijyoji, one of the popular shopping destinations for rustic homewares, antiques and cafes.

I loved their eclectic collection of old Japanese furniture sourced from Antique Tamiser in Ebisu and beautiful hand thrown ceramicware made by Kazumi Yoshimura (pictured below).

The desert pictured is a traditional sweets called Oshiruko, sweet Azuki bean soup with rice flour dumplings, which can be served cold or warm. Very mouth watering.

There is Zakkaya, a lovely shop in Fitzroy, where you can buy unique imported items from Japan and also hand made products made by local artist.

Zakkaya girls, the owners are very kind to stock my ceramic pieces and homewares such as draught door snakes and wheat bags, made from French mangle cloth.

Here are some new designs - porcelain wall decor in gunmetal and white.
Small doily in white is available for sale at Made It and Etsy.
It is currently sold as a plate but you can apply 3M picture hanging strips onto the piece and hang it easily.
